Free Tutorial How To Add Ruffles To Sleeves
This is an easy and fun way to add length to outgrown sleeves or to add a special touch to an outfit and make it match.
I chose to make a matching tee to go with my STRAPPY DRESS
(pattern available here).
Here is my tee:
This is what I did:
I measured the sleeve width……..
….then cut a piece of fabric 3″ long (measured from top to bottom) and twice the width of my sleeve (front and back), serged the bottom edge and folded it 0.5″ up, press it and sewed it down:
I ruffled this strip with my machine…..
Folded it in half with right sides together, then pinned and sewed it along pink dashes:
This is now my sewn together sleeve ruffle with the edges serged/hemmed:
I trimmed off my sleeve’s bottom hem…..
I positioned the ruffle underneath the sleeve like this:
and pinned the ruffle to the sleeve with right sides together, then sewed it on:
This is now my sewn on ruffle with the edges serged/.hemmed:
The finishing touch is to tuck in all threads and top stitch to make it look nice and neat…..
…..like this:
Repeat with second ruffle and other sleeve.
Ta-Da! Done!

Free Tutorial – Extending Length By Adding Lace
Wish you could let your girls wear some of the wardrobe pieces from last year?
Most of them might be too short.
Here’s a quick tutorial on how to extend the lengths of sleeves, top hems and pants! Adding lace is not only a great way to extend garment lengths but also it is in style!
Here’s my daughter’s outgrewn turtle neck from last year. Still in great shape!
I chose to use wide band lace for this project:
1st step is to measure the sleeve, top and pants hem
2nd step is to take this measurement times 4 so it will yield around the entire hems AND allow for ample width to be ruffled!
3rd step is to ruffle the lace with your machine. Set your machine to the highest tension and longest stitch length. Then sew along the edge with a 3/4 seam allowance:
Reset your machine after you are all done with all pieces of lace!
4th step is to sew the lace together as shown. Sew with a straight stitch along dashed line and backstitching beginning and end:
Do the same with the shirt bottom hem and jeans legs.
Tip For Tracing And Drafting Patterns
When working with sewing patterns, may it be that you make things from them or you may even make your own patterns, you know the importance of tracing a pattern!
Paper patterns from the fabric store or home printed PDF patterns come most likely with “nested” sizing which means that there are tons of lines and shapes in the same area, all on one sheet of paper. No problem to cut just one size out and throw the rest away but what if you are making ALL of the sizes? That’s right, you want to trace them onto other paper so you can actually save them for future uses.
There are several different types of paper to trace them on such as wax paper, specific pattern tracing paper (which can end up being way more expensive than buying the same pattern over and over from the store, or printing the PDF over and over again but that’s also time consuming. So, not a good option).
Here’s what I use! I happend to come across this awesome (and cheap) paper roll while shopping at our local Office Depot. If ound it at the section “poster & drawing” (who would have thought! lol)
a> It’s called “poster roll” and boy does it have a lot of paper on it for only $10.49!!
It measures 24 inches wide which is perfect for most kid sized sewing patterns (if you need it wider just tape two sheets together) and the total length is a whopping 25 yards!!!
Office Depot website picture:
Here is a small example of how I work with it: Since it’s on a roll it will curl like crazy but no worries, you know you’ll have all kinds of utensils to hold the corners down, right? 🙂
Here’s a snap shot of my work table and a pattern I am grading. YES! I grad manually with measuring, comparing, making errors, that’s why you’ll see a pencil and an eraser, ha!
Bottomline, it’s perfect for really anything pattern related such as tracing patterns since it’s just transparent enough to see the original pattern lines through, drawing/drafting patterns or for our kiddos to doodle on!
Let me hear what YOU use for this kind of project! Maybe there’s something I don’t know yet;)
