How To Start Your First Sewing Project

by Leave a Comment

Congratulations on your decision to start learning how to sew

Sewing is really a lot easier than most would think. Before you jump into the cold water you could look up a local sewing course, mostly offered by a fabric or craft store. Community centers might also offer classes for this kind of skill. Or join together with a friend who would like to start sewing as well.

The easiest project to start learning how to make could be a pillow or even a little girl’s simple skirt. If you have never sewn anything before you want to read the sewing pattern instructions and found out what type of fabric you need plus all the necessary notions for your project.

Materials:

Fabric
Thread to match your fabrics color
Sharp scissors

Straight pins
Anything else listed on the pattern
A basic sewing machine

To begin getting everything set up you want to make yourself familiar with your sewing machine. You will want to find the fabric and material requirements from your patterns so you can purchase the correct amount. To prevent fabric shrinkage, prewash your fabric, especially pure cotton or cotton/mixes. If you do not prewash certain fabrics that you do not know the quality of yet you might end up with less fabric than what your pattern calls for and which is especially bad, with ill fitting clothes because they might shrink in the wash.

Thread your machine properly and start reading the pattern or tutorial instructions in its entirety to make sure you fully understand the process.

Once that is completed you want to prepare your fabric which should be pre-washed and dried and pressed! Find the cutting information from your instructions and double check the size, dimensions etc. before cutting into your fabric. Here is a great tip to keep in mind for all future projects: measure twice, cut once!

If your pattern comes with pattern pieces, place those onto your fabric and pin them in place. Look for a layout instruction page to show you how to lay out your pieces on the fabric. Once you have them pinned you can start to cut out your fabric with your scissors.

Follow the instructions and take your time:

On most sewing patterns you will find contact information such as an email address or website that you can contact to get help, should you get stuck. Your local fabric store is also a great place to get further information or even tips from their trained staff. It is also highly recommended to do a quick internet search on a specific topic for a sewing step. Many sites such as sewing or craft blogs offer great tutorials. Once you have completed your first sewing project you will be amazed by how quick and easy it came together. If it was a piece of clothing for your special little one you will be proud to have made it yourself!

Ready to start your second sewing project? Let us know what was your first one and what you are going to sew next?
